Dendrieten worden meestal gevormd door mangaanoxide. Sommige van de andere mangaanoxiden die dendrieten vormen, bevinden zich in de hollandiet groep. Het zijn coronadiet, cryptomeleen en hollandiet. Twee andere mangaanoxide-mineralen die dendrieten vormen, zijn romanechiet en todorokiet.

Het woord dendriet komt van het Griekse woord "dendron", wat boom betekent. Vandaar de naam Dendritisch of Dendrietkwarts.

Vanwege de natuurlijke, boomachtige patronen wordt aangenomen dat dendritische kwarts een sterke verbinding met de natuur en de aarde bevordert, waardoor het een ideale steen is voor gronding en stabilisatie. De steen wordt vaak geassocieerd met creativiteit en persoonlijke groei. Men gelooft dat het de verbeeldingskracht stimuleert en helpt bij het overwinnen van creatieve blokkades. Dendritische kwarts zou helpen om emotionele balans te bereiken en een gevoel van innerlijke rust en kalmte te bevorderen. Deze kwartssoort wordt ook toegeschreven aan het bevorderen van geduld, volharding en het vermogen om uitdagingen en obstakels met een positieve houding te overwinnen. In meditatieve praktijken wordt gedacht dat dendritische kwarts helpt bij het verkrijgen van dieper inzicht en het verkennen van innerlijke landschappen, wat kan leiden tot verhoogd zelfbewustzijn en spirituele groei.
