Tijdens de grote centrumrazzia in mei 1943 werd hij opgepakt en met zijn vrouw Rachel en haar familie via Westerbork naar Sobibor gedeporteerd. Op een klein groepje mannen na werd het hele transport naar de gaskamers gevoerd.

Jules Schelvis belandde via Dorohucza, waar hij als drukker ontkwam, via Lublin, Radom en Auschwitz tenslotte in Vaihingen/Enz. Tijdens zijn omzwervingen wist hij als een kostbaar kleinood een klein zakspiegeltje met portret van zijn vrouw Rachel te behouden.

Uit een totaal van 34.313 joden die naar Sobibor werden gevoerd was hij een van de drie mannen die (enenals vijftien vrouwen) uit de hel terugkeerden. Zijn in sobere, maar heldere en aangrijpende stijl vertelde belevenissen zijn het meer dan waard om niet vergeten te worden.
