Ibn Kathier zegt in de inleiding van zijn tafsier: "Wanneer iemand naar de beste methoden van tafsier vraagt, dan antwoorden wij dat de meest correcte methode om de Koran uit te leggen met de Koran zelf is. Wat op een bepaalde plaats in de Koran in algemene termen wordt vermeld, wordt gewoonlijk op een andere plaats uitgelegd.
