Delheim Vera Cruz Pinotage 2022 is de icoonwijn van het familiehuis Delheim, afkomstig van hun beste Pinotage-perceel op de flanken van de Simonsberg. De naam verwijst naar Vera, de vrouw van wijlen “Spatz” Sperling, die een sleutelrol speelde in de opbouw van het estate. Wat maakt Delheim Vera Cruz Pinotage 2022 zo bijzonder? Het is een single vineyard Pinotage van oude bush vines, natuurlijk vergist en 18 maanden gerijpt op Franse eik, gemaakt om nu al te imponeren en nog jarenlang te kunnen rijpen.

Wijngaarden en regio

De druiven komen uit Zuid-Afrika, uit Stellenbosch, specifiek uit Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, een van de koelere en hoogst aangeschreven subregio’s voor krachtige rode wijnen. Vera Cruz is een kleine, ongeveer 1,9 hectare grote wijngaard op de westelijke flank van de Simonsberg, rond 240 m hoogte. De stokken staan hier als ongeïrrigeerde bush vines in kleirijke bodems met geërodeerd graniet, wat lage opbrengsten, dikke schillen en veel concentratie in het fruit geeft. Het relatief koele microklimaat op de helling zorgt voor een lang groeiseizoen, waardoor Pinotage volledig rijp wordt maar zijn frisheid en aromatische spanning behoudt.

Vinificatie en rijping

De oogst gebeurt volledig met de hand, met een strenge selectie in de wijngaard zodat alleen perfect rijpe trossen Vera Cruz binnenkomen. De druiven worden natuurlijk vergist bij lage temperatuur, zonder toevoeging van gekweekte gist, waardoor het karakter van perceel en druif zo puur mogelijk in de wijn blijft. De schillenkap wordt meerdere keren per dag opgepompt om kleur, geur en fijne tannines uit de schillen te halen zonder de wijn hard te maken. Na de vergisting rijpt de wijn 18 maanden in Franse eiken vaten van 300 en 500 liter, waarvan ongeveer 35% nieuw, zodat het hout de wijn ondersteunt met structuur, donkere chocolade en specerijen zonder het fruit te overheersen. Met een alcoholpercentage rond 14% en stevige maar zijdeachtige tannines is dit een Pinotage die gemaakt is voor lange flesrijping.

De wijn is 100% Pinotage van oude bush vines in de Vera Cruz-wijngaard; de combinatie van granietrijke bodems, lage opbrengsten en natuurlijke vergisting levert een diepe, geconcentreerde Pinotage op met veel donker fruit, verfijnde tannines en een duidelijk eigen signatuur.

Proefnotities en serveertips

In het glas toont Delheim Vera Cruz Pinotage 2022 een diep karmijnrode kleur. De geur is intens, met rijpe donkere vruchten zoals zwarte kers en bramen, aangevuld met geïntegreerde tonen van vanille, toffee en een vleugje specerijen en pure chocolade uit de Franse eik. In de mond is de wijn vol en sappig, met geconcentreerd rood en zwart fruit dat wordt gedragen door fijne, zijdezachte tannines en een lange, gelaagde afdronk. Serveer deze Pinotage bij 16 tot 18 °C. Hij komt schitterend tot zijn recht bij gestoofde kalfswang, lang gegaarde stoofschotels, wildgerechten, lamsbout uit de oven of rijk gekruide barbecuegerechten; dankzij zijn structuur en bewaarpotentieel is het ook een uitstekende keuze om nog 8 tot 10 jaar in de kelder te laten ontwikkelen.
