Voordat Johan Reyneke zich volledig richtte op de wijnbouw, studeerde hij filosofie. In 1998 nam hij het wijndomein over van zijn moeder en besloot deze twee passies te combineren. Hij is van mening dat alles wat leeft een gelijke kant verdient. En daarom ging hij direct de principes van de biodynamische grondlegger Rudolph Steiner toepassen. En zonder dromerig of vaag te werk te gaan, werkt hij er naartoe om volledig zelfvoorzienend te zijn. Sinds Johan zijn aanpak zijn de wijnen enorm verbeterd. Er wordt een stuk minder sulfiet gebruikt, omdat de druiven gezonder worden geoogst. En dankzij de natuurlijke gisten die gebruikt worden is de kwaliteit van de wijnen ook sterk bevorderd. De wijnen van Reyneke zijn stuk voor stuk puur, geconcentreerd en complex. Het landgoed omvat 20 hectare wijngaard met een prachtig uitzicht op Stellenbosch. Dankzij de ligging nabij False Bay genieten de druiven van een verkoelende oceaanwind. Dankzij de vele zonuren kunnen de druiven goed rijpen en ontstaat er voldoende zuren voor frisse en elegante wijnen. De Sauvignon Blanc druiven worden geoogst in geselecteerde percelen van de wijngaarden van Reyneke. Alleen het beste is goed genoeg en daarom worden ze met de hand geoogst. Waardoor in de wijngaarden zelf al een strenge selectie plaatsvindt. De druiven worden hierna een nacht gekoeld voordat ze met de hand worden gesorteerd en in hele trossen worden geperst. De most ondergaat vervolgens een spontane gisting in Franse eikenhouten vaten. De wijn rijpt 12 maanden op de grove droesem en tot slot nog vier maanden in roestvrijstalen tanks voordat de botteling plaatsvindt.De gebalanceerde Reserve White van Reyneke
In de geur tonen van limoen, venkel en vlierbloesem. Deze springen duidelijk uit het glas, aangevuld met hints van zwarte bessen en citroenschil. In de smaak een duidelijk gestructureerde wijn met fruitsmaken van citroen en appel. Een mooie fijne zuurgraad brengt het geheel goed in balans. Healthy, natural treat my dogs actually love—no mess!

These pig ears are the perfect natural alternative to rawhide. All three of my dogs go crazy for them, and I feel good giving them a single-ingredient treat.
What I used them for:
Occasional chew treats for my three dogs.
Pros:
Single-ingredient, natural treat
Dogs love the taste and texture
Doesn’t stain or leave a mess despite slobber
Good size for medium to large dogs
Cons:
Can be a bit odorous out of the bag (minor)

One-and-done treat for giant breeds (our 186lb foster approves)

We foster a 186lb Saint Bernard, and finding treats that actually satisfy her without requiring half the bag has been a challenge. These pig ears? Game changer.
What makes these work:
- ONE ear = one satisfied dog (compared to other treats where the bag says “35 per day” and she’d still beg for more)
- Keeps her busy for about 5 minutes of focused chewing
- She does a little excited dance when she sees the bag—can’t even sit, just wiggles
- Zero crumbs or mess because she devours every single bit, then spends the next hour sniffing around hoping another one appears
- She immediately grabs it and heads to her favorite bed to settle in—doesn’t move until it’s gone
The only “issue”:
There’s a bit of oil/greasiness when handling them, but nothing a quick hand wash can’t fix (Mrs. Meyer’s Cucumber soap works great, just saying).
Bottom line: If you have a giant breed and you’re tired of buying treats that require multiple servings or disappear in one bite, these are it.
