En alsof een huishouden dat getroffen wordt door armoede en huwelijksproblemen niet genoeg is, is Alans bohemienzus, Madge, stiekem de duinen in geslopen voor een wellustige ontmoeting met een Duitse krijgsgevangene. Het enige wat Alan wil is rust – en dat een knap koormeisje genaamd Janet hem opmerkt. Maar hoe meer hij een normaal leven wenst, hoe chaotischer het wordt. Bainbridge roept op gevoelige wijze het groeiende besef van Alan op dat ‘hij alleen maar kon hopen een verlengstuk van zijn ouders te zijn’.
