De bladeren van Acer platanoides 'Columnare' zijn donkergroen en hebben de typische Esdoorn vorm, met vijf lobben en gezaagde randen. In de herfst verkleuren de bladeren naar opvallende tinten van geel en goud.

In het vroege voorjaar, rond april, produceert de boom kleine, geelgroene bloemen die in trossen bij elkaar staan. Hoewel ze niet bijzonder opvallend zijn, zijn ze een vroeg teken van de lente en voegen ze een subtiele schoonheid toe.
