DESCRIPTION
This 10-session virtual course provides a unique in-depth exploration of the observation and analysis of standing and walking. Optimal Segment Kinematics and Alignment approach to Rehabilitation (OSKAR) principles give equal emphasis to segments and joints, crucial for understanding standing, walking, rehabilitation, and orthotic management. The course covers the alignments, kinematics and kinetics of typical and atypical patterns of standing, stepping, and walking with full gait cycles, emphasizing the application of OSKAR principles to orthotic management and rehabilitation programs. Discover clinical algorithms and tools for collaborative decision-making, including a Pictorial Tool that facilitates family-centered goal setting for orthotic management in all areas of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF), and a Dosage Tool.

Participants will learn to maximize biomechanical outcomes using footwear, ankle-foot orthoses, and their combinations, refine their clinical decision-making through video vector gait laboratory case studies focusing on conditions like cerebral palsy, neural tube defects, stroke, and apply OSKAR rehabilitation programs for enhanced mobility. The course, applicable to both pediatric and adult cases, culminates in participants being able to directly integrate these principles and techniques into their clinical practice, supported by a comprehensive 700-page manual.

IMPORTANT DATES
This course will run from October 2 to December 11, 2026.
The first self-study will be made available by August 28, 2026.
The course requirements must be completed by December 30, 2026, to receive credit.

The recordings of each of the sessions are available within 24 hours of the live airing if you are unable to attend a live session or wish to review the content. It is highly recommended that participants attend at least one live session from modules 1–4 and one live session from module five.

FACULTY

This course is presented by Elaine Owen, who has developed the OSKAR approach to rehabilitation. Elaine has been practicing as a physical therapist since the 1970s, working in and managing interdisciplinary multiagency childhood onset disability services.  She has postgraduate training in all areas of pediatric therapy, and qualifications in Lower Limb Orthotic Biomechanics and Clinical Gait Analysis. Her MSc in Rehabilitation Studies included a thesis about orthotic management of neurological conditions, normal standing and gait.  She is ESMAC trained in Clinical Gait Analysis. For over 30 years she has used a video vector gait laboratory for gait analysis, and orthotic and physical therapy management of children and adults, at Bangor, UK and other locations, during which time OSKAR was developed.  She has peer reviewed publications and has regularly been invited to teach her course and lecture internationally.  As well as through her own courses these principles have been presented at the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) World Congress, American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM), American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) and the European Society of Movement Analysis of Adults and Children (ESMAC). She has received a UK national award (MBE) for Services to Children with Disability and in 2019 AAOP awarded her the Clinical Creativity Award. She has experience as a caregiver of a child with a disability.

AUDIENCE
Orthotists, Pediatric Physical Therapists, Physical Therapists working with acquired or childhood-onset disability in adulthood, Orthotic Assistants, Physical Therapist Assistants, Orthotic Technicians, Orthotic Fitters, Pedorthists, Physicians and Surgeons (not offering CME).  Other professionals working in pediatrics have also found the content relevant and valuable.

LEARNER OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply Pictorial, Table and Dosage Tools for collaborative goal setting across the ICF components of body structures, body functions, activities and participation, for children who use ankle-foot orthoses
  • Demonstrate the six clinical algorithms for determining optimal orthotic designs, alignments and dosage in order to implement OSKAR (an Optimal Segment Kinematics and Alignment Approach to Rehabilitation.) The algorithms consider not only the ankle-foot orthosis but the entire AFO Footwear Combination

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
Self-study will consist of on-demand viewing of lectures, reading assignments and optional activities. Participants will complete an assessment at the end of each module. It is highly recommended that participants attend at least one live session from modules 1–4 and one live session from module 5. We strongly encourage you to attend the case study live sessions, as learners have consistently found this portion of the course invaluable for integrating the material. A community discussion board operates throughout the course, where participants who are not able to attend live sessions may post questions to faculty.

The course requirements must be completed by Dec. 30, 2026, to receive credit. Course rosters will be sent to ABC (for orthotists) at this time. Participants will have extended access to view materials through March 12, 2027 for review purposes only.

Weird smell
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
The pillows are great for someone looking for something cool and comfortable. We loved them so much that we bought a second pair. However, we were seriously disappointed with the odor of our last purchase. They give off a strong and indescribable chemical/burning plastic smell so nauseating that it’s difficult to sleep with. We’re hoping this issue will resolve with a couple more washes of the pillow cases, but am worried the source is the stuffing itself.

helped treat my sore neck
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Camping Pillow(Pack of 1)
This pillow — after dialing in the right amount of shredded foam — has greatly helped my sore neck. Initially, I had to remove some foam. Then I gradually added foam until it reached optimum comfort and support. It is also CPAP-friendly — especially when I position my head near the pillow's edge. (I am a left-side sleeper.) I like the travel size because I use a bulky hugging pillow to ease stress on my shoulder and elbow. That makes my side of the bed feel cramped if using a larger head pillow. A smaller pillow is easy to flip end-to-end in the middle of the night. I have spent lots of money on pillows over the years, but this is the best I've ever had for relieving [1] neck pain and [2] CPAP mask seal problems. Very comfortable, supportive, and affordable. I did not notice any unpleasant smell — and I am usually sensitive to that kind of thing. Would highly recommend.

Love them!
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
Love them! After 10 years with our MyPillows, they finally lost their fluff. The reviews I read of the MyPillows of today were not good; they didn’t have as much filling as they used to. These pillows remind me of how fluffy our new MyPillows were 10 years ago!! You sink right into them and can mush them however and they stay. These are way cheaper than the Coop and it’s the same concept; add or remove the filling as needed. The cooling side is a huge plus too! You won’t be disappointed with these pillows!

super smooth, silky, stays comfortable feeling. DO NOT DRY or wash with heat
Color: Blue, Size: Queen (U.S. Standard), Set name: Stretchy and Soft, Color: Blue, Size: Queen (U.S. Standard), Set name: Stretchy and Soft
I'm impressed. I have used cooling pillow cases before, and found them effective, but the cooling material have always been on just one side. These are 100% cooling material. The material is super smooth and silky feeling. It is great feeling against hair and skin (even better than my old polyester satin I was using before cooling pillowcases). The material is cool, and does not seem to get hot hot. The pillow cases are super stretchy with a small hidden zipper. They grab onto the pillow and dont loosen up. Makes my pillow look neat and clean, not sloppy from loose material. I can even have two pillows stacked and somehow despite being a smooth material, the pillows dont just slide off each other. The cooling aspect works by not trapping heat, not allowing heat to get to the pillow and hold it there. So yeh, the pillow case will feel warm eventually but if you have a fan, or AC, or flip the pillow, then it is is truly cool. Otherwise in my experience when I use a pillow without this, the pillow just gets hot, stays hot, and even with flipping it feels hot.. because the pillow itself has trapped the heat for remainder of night. Yuck. One thing to know and this is very important-- as I learned the hard way-- DO NOT DRY IN DRYER. DO NOT WASH IN HOT WATER. Heat will destroy the material ability to feel and stay cool. Do you want a regular heat trapping pillow case? Then go ahead and dry these in the dryer a few times and you will have a regular pillow case. HOw do I know? I bought these to replace another set (different brand, same idea, same instructions that I failed to remember). I always dried them in the dryer, and one night after having gloriously cool pillows, I noticed that my pillow was HOT night after night. It was then when looking for another set of pillow cases that I learned that they cant be exposed to heat like that. SO PLEASE, just AIR DRY. And so, after I got these and put them on my pillows, I had a much better nights rest. I remember thinking that I wasnt waking to rearrange my pillows. They were just comfortable all night long. Sure, I'd love an even colder pillow, but our room is on the warm side. But at least I wasnt noting the hot hot pillows anymore.
