ROBINSON, William Heath (author and illustrator). Bill The Minder. London, Constable & Co. Ltd. 1912.

4to. Original pale green cloth with large onlaid pictorial label to upper board surrounded by rococo flourishes in gilt, top edges green; pp. [xvi] + 254; illustrated with 16 fine mounted coloured, and tissue-guarded, plates and line drawings throughout in profusion; a fine copy in exceptional condition both internally and externally, with only the faintest speckling to endpapers and fore-edge of book block; scarce in this condition.

First edition, first issue, of this sought-after, and elusive, children's classic by the famed cartoonist and inventor of whimsically elaborate machines to complete basic everyday tasks. The name Heath Robinson has entered the lexicon to describe a particular brand of British eccentricity. In this fairy tale Heath Robinson weaves together a ridiculous, and riotous, series of events which exploit this talent. The main protagonist, a 15 year-old-boy named Bill, devises an array of gadgets to solve the problems faced by the eccentric figures he meets on his adventures. These include characters as diverse as the green-toed button crane of Baraboo, and a Sicilian cleaning lady. Given the task of looking after his younger cousins Boadicea and Chad, Bill and the two youngsters enjoy a loosely connected series of mind-bending experiences as the story unfurls.

Following the great success of his first major work, the masterpiece Uncle Lubin (1902), Heath Robinson followed up with another fantasy about a guardian of the young, but this time a champion child minder, Bill. The book is made up of 16 crazy stories which combine to form a work which the artist himself referred to as "not a book for children". Constable, the publisher, commissioned 125 line drawings, which are very finely executed and among Heath Robinson's best work, as well as 16 plates of jewel-like colour which surpass, in quality, much of his output. The publisher was probably experiencing financial pressures at the time of publication because far fewer of the expensive coloured plates were printed than sets of sheets, and only a relatively small run of the first issue of the book was produced in this decorative publisher's binding. Remainder sheets were issued subsequently in a much plainer red cloth, with half the number of plates. Interestingly three of the illustrator's children, Joan, Oliver and Alan, appear in one of the coloured plates.

Negative reviews are misleading it definitely works just fine.
Color: Silver
Noticed the only negative reviews were because the hooks would not fit and was sort of concerned about that, but I figured it might be one of those things where it’s the person’s fault not the product. Sure enough it was. The hook fits, yea you have to push it in there with a slight bit of force, but it definitely does fit. What those people don’t realize is that by design the hooks are like that to keep a firm hold onto the tray itself. I found it funny how mad people were about that when really it’s very very simple to make it work. Nice product sticks well, seems sturdy.

Good product, lousy instructions
Color: Silver, Color: Silver
This is a good product with terrible instructions. I’ve used this adhesive strip before so I know how to install the basket & how to remove the strip. To get a snug fit position one of the basket's vertical wires in the middle of one of the horizontal bars then press down hard until you hear it snap into place, it’s now snug & will not tip over. To remove the adhesive strip I used a putty knife & wiggled it underneath the strip until I had loosened & lifted enough of it to get a good grip & pull the rest off. Mine is installed on a ceramic tile back splash not in the sink so this method did not damage the tile, can't say what it would do to stainless steel. I'm a 72 y/o woman with arthritis, if I can get the adhesive off anyone can.

Works well, but very difficult to remove!
Color: Silver
Perspective: Ive had this caddy for 3 years and it has suited me well. Over time the hooks that hold the caddy in place loosened and the caddy would occasionally fall off the side of the sink wall. Not a huge deal, just a small inconvenience. Over time it started to happen more often because the plastic hooks completely lost their grip so I decided to replace it. Well it literally took me 3 days to get it off of the side of my sink. Using different tools to jimmy it off because the adhesive is sooo strong (which is a good thing, until you are looking to remove it). It took a razor blade and several bouts of goo gone to get the whole thing off as well as the leftover adhesive. The fact that it lasted for 3 years is a testament that it is a good product, but it lost several stars for the drama and pain and suffering it took to remove. I wont be buying another one.

Good For Deep Sinks
Color: Silver
This item is very sturdy however the piece on the outside that holds your rag tends to slip or lay flat all the time. The adhesive is very strong to the point where I needed to use a tool to get it off while moving, so you’ll never have to worry about it popping off your sink! I can only figure that this fits in all sinks because at my old apartment I had a very small sink the only thing I didn’t like due to having a small sink my rag was always touching the bottom of the sink and there wasn’t any space left in the side I had it on. If you have a big sink I’d suggest this item because it looks nice and it gives your wash cloth and sponge a home in the kitchen!
