CRE Wines is the slightly more serious sibling to Fin Wines in Australia's Yarra Valley, run by the same trio of JonJo McEvoy, Oliver Johns and Angus Hean. They practice organic viticulture and are in the process of getting certified. Soils are sandy loam over clay and gravel over mudstone.
For this succulent Syrah, grapes were handpicked, wild fermented as whole bunches, with no pump overs and pressed to old oak after eight days, then bottled after three months.
The result is bright and energetic, bursting with dark fruits, blackberries, raspberry and restrained jubey red fruits, entwined in earth, green herbs and black pepper. Made to drink now but also has the potential for ageing.
