1970s-vintage ROTH KERAMIK Guitar vase in red and black. Probably the maker’s most famous and sought-after form, especially in the rarer colors of yellow and purple, prices for which can reach into the thousands of dollars.

ROTH KERAMIK was founded in the late 1960s, or very early 1970s, by husband-and-wife team Edmund and Dorothea Roth. The factory was situated in Ebernhahn, roughly halfway between Cologne (Köln) and Frankfurt, in the Westerwald region of Germany. A central hub for the German ceramics industry, the area is known as the Kannenbäckerland (jug-baker’s land) and is home to the largest clay deposit in Europe. Quite small compared to the big names of German art pottery, ROTH employed only about 20 people in its heyday. Its output was naturally tiny when measured against that of industry giants like Scheurich and Carstens.

Dorothea Roth is believed to have been responsible for the company’s designs. Her signature pieces featured brightly colored, high-gloss, cut-out “lozenges” or “petals,” that were outlined with duller, black (or sometimes white), “fat-lava” glazing. This décor was reproduced on a variety of shapes, including the iconic Guitar and Banjo vases. Besides the most common orange, the striking colors used for the lozenges included red, yellow, and rare (highly collectible!) purple examples.

(“Fat lava” refers to a thick, bubbly, textured appearance that resembles volcanic rock or molten lava. Produced by a chemical reaction during high-temperature ceramic firing, the key ingredient used in its creation is silicon carbide powder. As kiln temperatures rise and glazes begin to melt into glass, the silicon carbide decomposes, generating carbon dioxide. The gas gets trapped within the melting, viscous glaze, forming bubbles. As firing continues, the bubbles swell and burst through the surface, creating either little craters or a foamy, textured layer similar to pumice. The term “fat lava” is believed to be a mistranslation from German, where the word meaning “thick”—referring to the glaze’s depth and sculptural quality—was rendered as the punchier “fat.”)

For many years, it was widely believed that Marei Keramik supplied ROTH with “blanks,” undecorated ceramic shapes, a common practice in the West German ceramics industry at the time. However, recent scholarship has at least partially debunked the idea. The implied relationship is now deemed a case of mistaken identity, owing to misattribution by collectors and historians, rather than a commercial partnership.

Very little else is known about ROTH KERAMIK. Despite its small size, the firm produced some of the most sought-after and collectible pottery of the late mid-century period while developing some truly distinctive volcanic and fat-lava glazes. Toward the end of the golden age of Art Pottery, ROTH began producing rather utilitarian tableware. The company was officially dissolved in 2008.

Good sturdy ball for aggressive chewer
Size: 4.5"
Nice heavy duty ball that my 7 yr old pitbull can chew on and not destroy it in 2 minutes. Wish that could get 3 for the cost but whatever. Nice bright colors . Good size that he won't choke on it .

Great ball but poor squeaked design
Size: 4.5"
My Rottie loves these balls. The ball lasts a long time even though he plays hard and chews them. My biggest complaint is the squeaker disconnects easily from inside the ball, the glue does not hold! We have bought many of these balls because eventually the area where the squeaker is attached comes away from the ball leaving an open whole that causes the ball to eventually developed a long crack at which point it no longer is able to be thrown nor is is fun for him any longer.

Well made and great fun for our Pittie
Size: 4.5"
My pittie loves these! They are way thicker than others. He has learned how to chew on the spikes. Seems like a good teeth cleaning too. Yes, the squeaker breaks! That is a great thing!! With his active chewing, that sound was driving us crazy after a while.

"Durable Fun: Pweituoet Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls for Aggressive Chewers"
Size: 4.5"
Product Review: The Pweituoet 4.5” Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls have been a hit with my dog, proving to be both durable and entertaining. Durability: These dog balls are impressively tough. My dog is an aggressive chewer, and most toys don’t last long, but these balls have held up exceptionally well. The heavy-duty material and spiked design are perfect for dogs who love to chew, providing both durability and safety. Entertainment: The built-in squeaker adds an extra layer of fun. It captures my dog’s attention immediately, and the squeak keeps him engaged for longer play sessions. The spikes also make the ball easy for him to grip and carry around. Size: The 4.5” size is ideal for medium to large dogs. It’s large enough to avoid being a choking hazard but still easy for my dog to pick up and play with. The size and weight are just right for games of fetch, too. Value: Given the durability and how much my dog enjoys these balls, they offer great value for the price. They’ve lasted much longer than other toys we’ve tried, making them a worthwhile investment for any dog owner with a tough chewer. Overall Verdict: The Pweituoet Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls are an excellent choice for medium to large dogs, especially those who are aggressive chewers. They’re durable, fun, and well-sized, making them a great addition to your dog’s toy collection. Highly recommended!

Actually stands up to use
Size: 4.5", Size: 4.5"
I have a pitbull who is a toy destroyer. All those toys, even the ones that say tough enough for destroyers, never hold up. THESE BALLS ARE AWESOME! I bought the 2 pack of the 4.5 inch balls and they lasted a year. I literally am writing this review after ordering a new set. These are well worth the money and Ghost (my dog) loves them. Hes a 103lbs pitbull and his life mission is cuddles and destroying his toys... and these lasting a year of everyday use is friggin awesome. Both toys failed in the same way eventually. They gave out in a circle around the "squeker".
