The Iron-Bound Heritage Console

Long before it became a focal point in a modern home, the robust timber of this console weathered the intense sun and monsoon rains of India. Crafted from thick, reclaimed architectural wood—likely the imposing doors or gates of a traditional courtyard—this piece carries the weight of decades of daily life within its grain.

Echoes of the Past The true beauty of this console lies in its raw, unpolished history. Heavy iron straps, originally hand-forged to fortify grand entryways, remain securely bolted across the pale, sun-bleached surface and down the sturdy side panels. At the very center of the tabletop rests a beautifully worn iron pull-ring—a tactile reminder of the countless hands that once grasped it to open heavy doors. These rugged, industrial details provide a striking contrast to the dry, organic warmth of the aged wood.

Grounded & Purposeful While its origins are steeped in history, its current form is incredibly practical. Stretching over two meters in length, its grand proportions make it an ideal anchor for a sweeping hallway or the perfect architectural weight to sit behind a large linen sofa. The addition of a solid lower shelf offers generous space for oversized rustic vessels, woven baskets, or the curated homewares you might find at The Byron.

Every groove, oxidized nail, and imperfection has been intentionally preserved, offering a deeply grounding aesthetic that celebrates the imperfect, enduring beauty of age.

A Reading of "The Last One"
Format: Paperback
This poem represents Merwin at his insidious best, the conversational tone of the poem slowly leading to something imminently and undefinably dark, doom-laden. The poem was originally published in "The Lice" a book of poems written in the French countryside where, Merwin says, "I felt at once a profound attraction to the rural world in which I was living and a disquieting recognition of the fragility and uncertainty of my relation to it." "The Last One" ominously conveys that disquiet.

I have many books by Mr Merwin and I like the Budhist mindset that shines through.
