The Craft: Zitan Wood with Resin Accents

This stick is carved from high-density Zitan wood, then treated with a concave-convex texture on the surface. The texture improves grip when inserting into hair. Blue and red iridescent flecks are embedded into the wood, creating a marbled pattern that resembles a galaxy. No two sticks have the same distribution of flecks.

The resin and wood are fused before shaping, so the surface is smooth to the touch. There are no joints or attachments — the stick is a single piece.

The Zitan Wood

Zitan, also called black sandalwood, is a dense hardwood native to Southeast Asia. It was used in Ming and Qing dynasty furniture for its fine grain and deep color. The wood is not pure black — it has subtle brown or purple undertones that show in different light.

Each stick is pre-treated with protective oil before shipping. Over time, the wood may darken slightly with exposure to oils and light. Small grain variations and hand-tool marks are normal for a natural material.

Fit & Care

Works well for all hair volumes, including very thick hair. The rigid shaft holds heavy buns without flexing. Best for hair at least shoulder length; optimal hold for armpit to bra-strap length. If you have fine or shoulder-length hair, consider our short hair sticks for a lighter fit.

Care: Wipe with a dry cotton cloth after use. Avoid soaking in water or exposing to prolonged humidity. Reapply mineral oil occasionally if the wood feels dry.
