The Single - 30th Anniversary (Cassette)

Originally recorded while still in high school, Lil Grimm’s Children of the Corn emerged from the heart of Memphis’ underground rap scene in October 1995. Released first on cassette in a tiny run that circulated hand-to-hand, the record became a word-of-mouth phenomenon—passed around schoolyards, dubbed on boom boxes, and traded in parking lots long before “going viral” had a name.  The cassette was reissued in a very small run in 2020 and has been out of print until now. Gate Girl Records has reissued the cassette in a red tape shell with the same tracklist as the 30th Anniversary vinyl pressing. 

Influenced by the rising “horrorcore” sound pioneered by Memphis legends DJ Paul and DJ Squeeky, Grimm and his crew put their own sinister twist on the formula: haunting samples, ghostly synth lines, and a suffocating atmosphere that set them apart in the city’s fertile underground. The Children of the Corn project blended Grimm’s grim storytelling with the paranoia and menace of early-90s Memphis street culture—earning it cult status among tape collectors and rap historians alike.

Key tracks like “Deep Into the Woods” and “Devil Sh*t” showcase Grimm’s ability to paint vivid, nightmarish soundscapes, striking a balance between street authenticity and horror-fueled surrealism. These songs, and the record as a whole, would go on to influence generations of DIY rappers who built their identities on limited cassette runs, dark beats, and relentless hustle.
