While this comes from a tree that was spalted, this block does not appear to have any spalting on the observable faces. This block includes some bark and wane, where an edge intersects the outside of the trunk (see photos). There are also some very minor bug boreholes of approximate 1 mm diameter; see photos for close up. I

I wouldn't gift these... they seem to start having grinding issues after a few days of use. It feels like the grinding piece is binding / going to break when turning the top. Would not purchase again, and look for more durable item.
