Surrounded by the Mersey River on the outskirts of the township of Latrobe, Pig Island is now a picturesque public space accessible via a footbridge from Bells Parade. Around 1860, District Surveyor James M Dooley noted that 'at flood or high water' the depth around the island averaged from six to ten feet, with all level areas subject to flooding. Surveyed into two main blocks, he estimated the value of the larger section (A) as £120, with the smaller block (B) valued at £100. The area of land along Bells Parade set aside for a botanical garden in 1892 is locally known as 'Police Paddock'.
