Take your Settlers of Catan sessions to a richer, more tactical stage with Catan Cities & Knights. This acclaimed expansion expands the board game you love by adding dynamic city-building, powerful knights, and a tense barbarians mechanic, turning every roll of the dice into a strategic challenge. If you’re seeking deeper competition, longer campaigns, and more meaningful decisions, Cities & Knights delivers.

What makes Cities & Knights different

Unlike the base game, this expansion introduces three new layers of strategy that interact with your existing resources. You’ll collect commodities—coin, paper, and cloth—alongside your traditional resources. Those commodities are the fuel for upgrading your towns into thriving cities and unlocking potent city improvements. As your cities grow, so does your influence on the board, opening opportunities to earn extra victory points and special abilities that opponents must contend with.

Core mechanics you’ll master

  • Knights and barbarians: Defend your settlements against periodic barbarian invasions. You can mobilize knights to push back the threat, adding a dramatic, real-time strategic element to your turns and demanding teamwork and timing from your group.
  • City improvements: Invest commodities to upgrade cities and unlock powerful capabilities. City improvements change how you generate income, defend your holdings, and gain leverage over the track that determines victory potential.
  • Metropolises: Strategically upgrade to metropolis status to secure lasting advantages and extra scoring potential. Metropolises are hard-wought assets that can shift the balance late in the game.
  • Progress cards: Navigate a fresh deck of progress cards across Politics, Trade, and Science. Each card offers unique bonuses—seasoned players use them to outpace rivals, adjust to the board, and seize critical moments.
  • New balance of risk and reward: The barbarian track, city upgrades, and commodity economy create a more interconnected web of decisions. Your strategy must adapt to shifting threats, resource flows, and the evolving board state.

Who this expansion is for

Catan Cities & Knights is ideal for players who have enjoyed Settlers of Catan and are hungry for a richer strategic experience. It suits groups that like longer, more narrative sessions, players who enjoy city-building and resource management, and anyone who relishes turning a lull in the game into a pivotal turn with a well-timed knight deployment or a bold city upgrade. It’s also great for groups that want to extend playtime with a modular system—the expansion scales with player count and familiarity with the base game.

Gameplay flow and what to expect at the table

Playing Cities & Knights reshapes the pacing of a familiar game. Early rounds focus on laying a solid foundation and collecting commodities to prepare for city upgrades. Midgame sees you weaving defense into your strategy: knights are essential to weather barbarian threats, and the decision to invest commodities into city improvements becomes a key differentiator between contenders and contenders-to-be. As the game advances, metropolises introduce high-value opportunities that can redefine endgame scoring. The combination of defense, development, and expansion keeps everyone engaged from the first roll to the final settlement.

Practical tips to maximize your setup

  • Balance resource diversity with commodity production. Early investments in commodities pay off later through city upgrades and improvements.
  • Coordinate with teammates (if playing in teams) on knight deployment to repel barbarians more efficiently and protect vulnerable cities.
  • Plan for metropolises: identify which cities are best suited for upgrade and align your commodity flow to reach those goals before rivals.
  • Leverage progress cards at key moments. A well-timed card can turn a tight spot into a decisive advantage.
  • Adapt your strategy as the barbarian track advances. When danger grows, prioritize defense without neglecting growth elsewhere on the board.

Battle-tested value for enthusiasts

Cities & Knights isn’t just a new layer of complexity—it’s a thoughtful evolution of the Catan experience. It preserves the core charm of resource trading and expansion while introducing tangible waypoints for strategic planning. The city-improvement system creates a meaningful pathway from early settlement to late-game dominance, and the barbarian mechanic ensures every game unfolds with momentum, tension, and satisfying, game-long ambition.

Compatibility and setup essentials

This expansion is designed to pair with Settlers of Catan, elevating the base game experience without replacing it. If you’re ready to explore a more ambitious version of Catan, Cities & Knights is the natural next step that unlocks new strategies, longer campaigns, and a broader range of winning paths.

Fun with a late blooming omega
Format: Kindle
I like this book. The story is fun, cute, and sexy. There's just a little drama, some excellent, steamy scenes, and a fairly good relationship building storyline. I especially like how all the main characters are a bit older than the usual 20 somethings I tend to see in this kind of book. Having said that, I wish there were more descriptions of the places, as well as the food in the fancy restaurant. I enjoyed the cocktails at the club, so I missed that kind of detail when Gray took Madison on a dinner date. I also wish there had been more interaction between Lucas and Madison, and Lucas and Rian. It felt a bit lopsided, with a focus on Rian, Madison, and Gray. I wish it had been proofread - there are a lot of typos, but nothing too distracting.

Madison Deserved Better
Format: Kindle
Madison was a beta...except she wasn't any longer. She was a late presenting Omega. And she was struggling. She was tall and thin, not tiny and curvy. She was opinionated. She was everything an Omega was not. After suffering through her first heat, her friends took her to Ardor, a club where Omegas came to safely find Alphas. She's not expecting much but then she connects with a sexy beta. And when she meets his Alphas, they set her body on fire. Maybe, she's found her no-strings-attached heat pack. Maybe, she's found something more. I could not connect with the characters in this book, so their story never resonated with me. And there was no love story; there was sex. Grey made it clear from the beginning that he had a true love and it was his beta boy, Rian. He went so far as to reassure Rian “Say the word, I’ll never touch her again. Lucas can put the babies in her. I only need you, beta boy”. So, Madison was there for babies, no emotions needed. Nice. No, thank you. I want the Omega to be the center of their world, not an incubator. Lucas and Rian weren't any better. After her heat, they let her leave. Not one of them made her feel valued. No one gave her a reason to stay or even offered a cuddle. And the sex didn't even come across as mind-blowing. Madison deserved better.

Pretty Darn Good
Format: Kindle
So I’ve been on a omega kick and this definitely hit the spot. Madison was frustrating at times with how she acted towards Lucas, Gray, and Rian. It was like she said towards the end, she didn’t believe she deserved nice things. It would have been nice to hear from her best friends again. They kind of were there in the beginning and the gone except for mention of text messages received from them. I feel like her friends would have been great help in encouraging Madison to go with the pack and never give Brent another chance because he was toxic. I loved Rian. His personality was awesome. His humor. His ability to make Madison comfortable whenever she was feeling overwhelmed. And the fact he fell for her and she fell for him first. They are cute together. I do feel like Lucas was the odd man out though. Like Lucas didn’t develop as much of a relationship with Madison. I would have really liked to see more development in the relationship between them. It was also the same with him and Rian. There is really no relationship displayed. Most of the relationship being displayed is between Rian and Gray. Nevertheless, I loved reading about the dynamic that came to fruition during the entirety of this story. Madison finally got her happiness. And Brent finally got punched in the face. Everyone got exactly what they deserve.

Pack's Promise was okay but not great
Format: Kindle
Pack's Promise was okay but not great. I won't recommend it to anyone that I know. PRO: * Very likable characters * Lots of steamy scenes that are written very well * The spelling and grammar are good * The punctuation is good with the exception of using hyphens instead of commas. Lots of hyphens. Lots and lots of hyphens. CON: * Almost no interactions with any characters outside of Madison and the pack * Nearly no plot. They meet, get together for a heat, agree to make it permanent, done * Quite a few typos such as extraneous words, missing words and words out of order THINGS TO KNOW: * More steamy scenes than storytelling * A lot of MM & MMM, some MFMM during heat
