Drawn from a single new American oak barrel, Cask 986 captures the bold, uncompromising spirit of Privateer’s Navy Yard lineage while letting the wood truly take center stage. In the glass, it glows deep copper with slow, viscous legs. The nose opens with warm oak and toasted walnut, layered with hints of caramelized sugar and a faint thread of anise. On the palate, it’s dry and assertive — toasted walnut leads the way, followed by flashes of vanilla bean, light molasses, and a whisper of licorice. The texture reflects its new American oak upbringing: firm, tannic, and mouth-drying in a way that accentuates the rum’s natural spice. The finish carries long waves of warm oak, nutmeg, and a touch of sea-salted chocolate.
