Common names: Foxglove Beardtongue, Mississippi Penstemon, Smooth White Beardtongue, Talus Slope Penstemon

Family: Plantaginaceae

Origin/Distribution: central to eastern North America (No longer designated as native to Maine; you will have to ask the Native Plant Trust about that). These plants were grown from seed collected in New England.

Habitat: forest clearings, woodland edges, field, savanna

More: An excellent nectar and pollen source for long-tongued bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, mason bees, bumblebees, and miner bees. Penstemons, including this one, support the Beardtongue Mason Bee, Osmia distincta, a specialist bee that occurs in Maine. P. digitalis is a larval host for the Geranium Plume Moth, Amblyptilia pica, the Verbena Bud Moth, Endothelia habesana, the Purple-lined Sallow, Pyrrhia experimens, and the Confused Haploa, Haploa confusa, among others. All of these occur in Maine. This makes an attractive cut flower and is deer resistant, rabbit resistant, and drought tolerant.

Good Toy Reward for Training
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
A great non-food reward for dog training and play! It’s the perfect size for my German Shepherd and the tie makes it easy to carry and play tug. It’s also been very durable for her sharp teeth!

Didn’t last long
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
One of my puppies chewed the rope apart within an hour. They still have one of the balls and play with it often.

Good for playing tug of war, but better with a knotted handle
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Strong and durable rope ball. I use it to play tug with my Doberman Pinscher -- at least until she decides that she's taking it, then she does!! The size is good, list of price is a good value for two, and my dog has a lot of fun with it. As you can see in the picture, there was not a knotted handle at the end. I was never a boy scout and don't know my knots and so anything I try to tie comes apart when we start playing. It would be nice if it came as it looked in the listing: with a knotted loop at the end.

Pricey for quality but my dogs love them!
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
This toy is a bit on the pricey side for what it is, and no matter how many times I try to tie it, I just cannot get it to stay secured. I really like the idea behind it, but the overall quality feels just okay rather than amazing. The ball itself is very lightweight and almost feels more like a dense foam than traditional rubber, which initially threw me off. That said, it has actually been holding up well with regular use, which is a pleasant surprise. Most importantly, my puppies absolutely love these. The biggest win for me is that it comes as a two pack, which means I can play with both dogs at the same time without anyone feeling left out. At the end of the day, my girls are happy, and that makes me happy too.
