Does not like dry, poorly drained, or heavy clay soils.

Origin/Distribution: central Japan

Habitat: damp woods and mountainous regions

More: Lovely texture for the shady parts of the  garden, especially on slopes or by steps that show its waterfall-like growth habit off to best effect. Try popping a few stems into a flower arrangement, either fresh or dry. Slow to get going in the spring and slow to mature. I am pretty sure the plant pictured is a cultivar, but it gives you a good sense of the form. H. macra is the straight species and will be greener.
