Explore the gripping historical narrative of 'Hungry Bengal', a brand new publication from Hurst Publishers, ISBN 9781787389670, released in 2023. This essential read delves deep into the pivotal years leading to India's independence and the consequential partition. Bengal emerged as a critical battleground during the Indian struggle against colonial rule and played a vital role as an Allied stronghold in the fight against Japan during World War II. These events forged a distinct historical context marked by political uncertainty, social turmoil, and a deeply impactful collective violence.

Dive into the intricate socio-political fabric of pre-partition Bengal as 'Hungry Bengal' examines three major crises: the devastating Bengal famine of 1943, the catastrophic impact of the Second World War, and the harrowing Calcutta riots of 1946. This discussion is crucial for understanding the interwoven threads of hunger, warfare, and civil strife that defined the colonial era in Bengal, particularly as the British Empire faced imminent collapse.

According to History Today, acclaimed author Janam Mukherjee offers a riveting account of the Great Famine of 1943, presenting compelling arguments that highlight how famine escalated the Hindu-Muslim riots in Calcutta, ultimately leading to the tragic partition of the subcontinent. This thought-provoking exploration is essential for those interested in understanding the complex dynamics of colonial India and the legacy of its historical crises. Take a journey through a watershed moment in history with 'Hungry Bengal', ensuring you grasp the nuances of this transformative period.

Description:

The years leading up to the independence and accompanying partition of India mark a tumultuous period in the history of Bengal. Representing both a major front in the Indian struggle against colonial rule, as well as a crucial Allied outpost in the British/American war against Japan, Bengal stood at the crossroads of complex and contentious structural forces — both domestic and international — which, taken together, defined an era of political uncertainty, social turmoil and collective violence.

While for the British the overarching priority was to save the empire from imminent collapse at any cost, for the majority of the Indian population the 1940s were years of acute scarcity, violent dislocation and enduring calamity. In particular there are three major crises that shaped the social, economic and political context of pre-partition Bengal: the Second World War, the Bengal famine of 1943, and the Calcutta riots of 1946. Hungry Bengal examines these intricately interconnected events, foregrounding the political economy of war and famine in order to analyse the complex nexus of hunger, war and civil violence in colonial Bengal at the twilight of British rule.

‘Janam Mukherjee has written an engrossing account of the most tragic event in the history of Bengal, the Great Famine of 1943 … What singles out Mukherjee’s book is his thesis that the famine was at the root of the Hindu–Muslim violence that consumed Calcutta during the Great Killings of 1946, thereby contributing to the even more cataclysmic partition of the subcontinent a year later.’ — History Today

‘Mukherjee’s great

Good value for the money
Color: Purple
This is a great little case. This is used for my elderly aunt and uncle’s ipad which doesn’t get a lot of use. The case is protective and opens up to hold the ipad at a couple of different levels. The keyboard is not as smooth as the apple keyboard I have for my own ipad but it really works well, holds a charge for a long time and was a great price.

{Dveracious Shopper:- Just so you know, My reviews won't have fancy videos and photos sometimes but I post honest reviews based on the usability of these products and I did pay my own money to buy these products, so its not a free product review. I use it before I review it as I am committed to provide honest feedback based on the product's usability} My daughter chose and she is using it on her I pad. I love the functionality of it However not a fan of the removable keyboard, even though some may like it. it protects the I pad and that's what we won't. Has pretty color options too. Fits great.

Good for the price
Color: Black
I used to have a Smart Keyboard. If you compare it to that (discontinued) or the Magic Keyboard, you’ll be unhappy. But I can’t imagine a better product at this price point. The good: • Case is substantial & protective. • When in use, the iPad stays upright (it rests in 1 of 2 grooves, so angle is mildly adjustable). • Keyboard is easy to install, & connects quickly when you turn it on (maybe 2 seconds) • Keys feel good when typing • Lights are fun (but you can turn them off, if you’re not into that). • It works great for casual use, & it’s so cheap (I paid $28). In comparison, the Magic Keyboard is $250. If you do a lot of typing though, you want to invest in getting something better. The meh: • The case is a bit fiddly to open & get set up, mainly bc the keyboard sits in the center flap when closed, but you have to move it down to the end in order to use it. • I type about 45 wpm, & it keeps up. There are occasional lags though. If you type fast, I think you’d be frustrated, when you have to stop & retype what it missed. • It turns off after a couple minutes, to save battery. Which is mildly annoying when I resume typing, & have to retype my sentence bc it needed to wake up. It only takes like 2 seconds, not a huge deal. But bc of this, I def wouldn’t recommend using during lectures or meetings where you have to keep up. For my casual use (maybe a couple hours per week), it works great. • You have to remember to turn it on & off, to conserve battery. You have to remember to charge it, & to do that you may need 2 charging cords for your iPad. The Magic Keyboard, in comparison, is powered by your iPad. You don’t even need to think about it.
