The Craft: Hand-Carved Sandalwood

Each fork is carved from a single piece of sandalwood, with two prongs shaped to hold hair securely. The wood is selected for straight grain and even density, then carved by hand using chisels and sanded to a smooth finish. No stains or lacquers are applied — the natural color and scent of the wood are preserved.

The fork's prongs are slightly tapered for easy insertion, and the head is rounded to sit comfortably against the scalp. The carving marks are minimal, but each piece shows subtle variation in grain and color, a sign of natural material.

The Sandalwood

Sandalwood has been used in Chinese woodworking for centuries, prized for its fine grain and lasting fragrance. The wood contains natural oils that give it a soft, sweet scent that persists for years. Black sandalwood is dense and dark, green sandalwood has a greenish-brown hue, and red sandalwood (zitan) is a deep purple-red.

Because sandalwood is a natural product, color and grain vary from piece to piece. Small knots or mineral streaks may appear — these are not flaws but marks of genuine wood. The scent is strongest when new and will fade slightly over time, but can be revived by gentle buffing.

Fit & Care
