Resists oxidative stress. NAC exhibits direct activity on certain reactive oxygen and nitrogen species due to its unique molecular structure. It also works to help increase intracellular cysteine for the maintenance of glutathione homeostasis. A systematic review and meta-analysis of trials involving NAC supplementation reported significant increases in antioxidant markers including glutathione, catalase, and Total Antioxidant Capacity. Research suggests that NAC paired with glycine, another building block for glutathione, may provide optimal protection from free radicals.*
