2022 Canada The Imperial State Crown Special Edition Proof Silver Dollar (No Tax)

The elegant design features the Imperial State Crown carried on a cushion and framed by maple leaves and roses to represent the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. A Queen Elizabeth rose and a maple leaf appear at the edges of a banner that bears the face value, “1 DOLLAR”, while “CANADA” is inscribed at the top. Selective 24 karat gold plating accentuates the design.

The obverse features a new tribute design combining the four effigies of Queen Elizabeth that have graced Canadian coinage since her coronation in 1953. The effigies span from showing the young Queen at the age of 27 at her coronation to the most recent effigy used through her 2022 platinum jubilee in 2022.

While St. Edward’s Crown is worn for Coronations, it is the Imperial State Crown that is worn for most formal occasions, such as the opening of (British) parliament. The State Crown has been replaced ten times since the Restoration in 1660. The Imperial State Crown that was worn by Queen Elizabeth was made for the coronation of her father King George VI in 1937. This in turn was a replica of the crown designed for Queen Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria in 1838.

First introduced in 1971 and issued in every year since, the most important historic and commemorative themes usually reserved for the proof silver dollar denomination, making this series one of the most interesting and the longest running annual series.

Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926, and acceded to the throne on February 6, 1952 upon the death of her father King George VI. Her coronation was held on June 2, 1953. Her Majesty ruled with grace and dignity for more than 70 years until her death on September 8th , 2022.
