Discover the gripping tale of *Pushing His Luck: Report of the Expedition and Death of Harry Whitcombe*. This compelling account, translated by author Hilary Low from the original work of Swiss goldminer Jakob Lauper, chronicles the harrowing expedition of 1863 across the treacherous Southern Alps. At the heart of this historical narrative are two intrepid adventurers: Henry Whitcombe, a dedicated civil engineer and the Provincial Road Surveyor of Canterbury, and the resilient Lauper, who faced relentless challenges in the midst of a gold rush frenzy. As they navigated extreme weather and debilitating hunger, they traversed the Main Divide, the pathway now immortalized as Whitcombe Pass. Tragically, in a dire turn of events, Whitcombe lost his life while attempting to cross the perilous Taramakau River, leaving Lauper to recount their ordeal and journey back to Christchurch against all odds. This edition presents the first accurate translation of Lauper's vivid firsthand account, shedding new light on their expedition. Perfect for history buffs and enthusiasts of gold rush narratives, *Pushing His Luck* is an essential addition to any collection. Experience the drama and resilience of human spirit as you read about this pivotal moment in New Zealand’s exploration history. Don't miss out on this unique historical insight! Author: Hilary Low translated from Jakob Lauper Publisher: Canterbury University Press

In 1863 Henry Whitcombe, a young civil engineer and Canterbury's Provincial Road Surveyor, led an expedition to find a route across the Southern Alps in advance of the West Coast gold rushes. Jakob Lauper, a hardy Swiss goldminer, was hired to accompany him. The journey turned to tragedy. Dogged by appalling weather and half-starved, the two men traversed the Main Divide by a pass that now bears Whitcombe's name, and struggled down to the western beach. There the exhausted Whitcombe drowned while attempting to cross the flooded Taramakau River. Against extraordinary odds, Lauper survived and made his way back to Christchurch. His report on the expedition was translated into English and published mid-1863. Pushing His Luck provides for the first time an accurate translation of Lauper's vivid account, and explains the significance of new information brought to light. Nearly 150 years after the event, the truth about this journey is finally told.

Every Glamorous Pup Needs Pawfum
Color: Black Noir Pawfum, Size: One Size, Color: Black Noir Pawfum, Size: One Size
As a sophisticated young lady with impeccable taste, I can confidently say that the Chewnel Noir Pawfum is a must-have for every fashionable pup. The moment I got my paws on it, I knew it was special. It’s soft, adorable, and the perfect size for carrying around the house, chewing, cuddling, and showing off during my puppy playdates. It adds just the right amount of luxury to my toy collection. Not only does it look fabulous in photos, but it also keeps me entertained for hours. My humans can’t stop laughing every time they see me strutting around with my designer “pawfum.” If you’re a puppy who loves the finer things in life, this toy deserves a spot in your collection. Five paws from Pennie Lou! Because every glamorous girl needs her signature scent.

Will probably be destroyed soon, but SUPER CUTE!
Color: Pink Purse, Size: One Size
Super cute! It will probably eventually be ripped to shreds by my pups soon because it is not as sturdy as other toys out there. It is also pretty small so not the best for large dogs destructive dogs. My lab tries to eat it and rip it but my small chihuahua plays with it and fetches it (she also looks adorable holding it her mouth!!)
