Another is that often the weft (which is wool) is dyed a red color and the warp is natural color wool. The knot used in rugs from this region is symmetrical, meaning that the knot is tied over two or more warps with both strands shooting thru the pile. The design on this piece reflects two red polygons, typical of the province. The representation of animals, figures and cross-like motifs probably means the weaver was Armenian, as the Monhammedans (Muslims) avoided the depiction of these types of motifs. Tribal rugs are a family production. The girls and women are typically the weavers. Boys and men keep the sheep, shear, wash and dye the wool and separate into different shades. Condition is good with age appropriate wear. Professionally cleaned.
