It was present during the 1939 invasion of Poland and immediately showed its effectiveness as a part of the much-vaunted swift German attacks. Numerous other variants including anti-tank guns were made, and its production run came to 16,000 vehicles by the end of the war in 1945, contributing on all fronts for beleaguered German forces.
